This picture of the Fond du Lac Military Band is believed to have been taken shortly after the group was organized in 1898. The setting appears to be Lakeside Park, which had been purchased by the city in 1895. Conductor and Business Manager H. G. Bowen is seated in front. The number of musicians (24) and most of the instrumentation corresponds to the list which was published in The Commonwealth on May 28, 1898, when the Band’s formation was announced.

This picture was taken in 1950, shortly after new uniforms had been purchased. In the background is the old Lakeside Park Pavilion, which, like the present structure, was adjacent to the Bandstand. The picture was furnished by Jerry Abraham, one of Joe Schmitz’s many students who played in the Band. With Schmitz’s encouragement, Abraham earned a degree in music from UW-Madison. He recently retired from a long career on the music faculty at UW-Green Bay. Shown in the picture are:  Front Row: Herman Mertz, Betty Gysbers, Miles Adrian, A. K. The Centennial Band is a wind ensemble of 18 to 30 players that performs at festivals, picnics and other special events throughout Fond du Lac County and beyond. Formerly called the Festival Ensemble, the group earned its new moniker during the Band’s Centennial celebration in 1998, when it presented a series of concerts in the style of "military" or concert bands at the turn of the 20th century. Personnel shown above, at Fond du Lac’s Galloway House are:  Row 1 – Ray Wifler, Donna Wirth, Rita Pautsch, Judy Pellerin. Row 2 – Nickole Kawleski, Tami Dutton, Andrew Coffey, Sherri Beisser, Virginia Perrizo. Row 3 – Tim Nachtwey, Diane Chiesa, Erika Wifler, Warren Wirth. Row 4 – Dan Steward, Jason Ehlert, J. R. The Centennial Band enjoyed a goodwill tour to northeast Wisconsin on Aug. 18-20, 2000. The twenty-eight musicians who participated were photographed at the bandstand on the lawn of the Veterans Home at King WI, after a Sunday afternoon concert for about 100 veterans, spouses and friends. Performances were also held at Loon Lake near Shawano on Friday evening, and at Lake Park in Antigo as part of a Buckskin Rendezvous on Saturday afternoon. (Photo Credit: Jim Chiesa)

Music in the Park

In the summer of 1959 the Saturday Evening Post ran the above photo in its "The Face of America" series. Under the title"Music in the Park," the caption read as follows:

Once upon a bygone time, bandstands such as this one in Lakeside Park, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, stood proudly in almost every town square. Here lay the Sabbath’s most exciting – in fact, only – public entertainment. Americans who came along before such newfangled devices as movies, radio and television lured the audiences indoors can well remember when the warm breath of summer brought, as surely as lilacs, the Sunday band concert. The soft wind rustled the leaves, old folks visited with neighbors, youngsters played tag on the dandelion-dotted grass, and courting couples found seats in the shadows where, possibly, they might hold hands. The band leader, splendid in blue and gold, brought down his baton – and the glorious strains of Ta-ra-ra-boom-der-é or Semper Fidelis burst forth . . . . It is still that way on the shore of Lake Winnebago, where for fifty-nine years the Fond du Lac Military Band has played open-air concerts from this bandstand every Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day – concerts that will continue for many years to come, say the people of this band-music-loving town.

The musician three chairs to the right of the Conductor in the front row (partially hidden by the trumpet player next to the railing) is Jim Arthur, who learned trumpet from Joe Schmitz and continues in the Band today as its currently-oldest member.

Shown here is the audience that attended the August, 2000 performance by the Kids from Wisconsin at Buttermilk Creek Park. Capacity crowds such as this regularly turn out for the Buttermilk Festival's headliner events, including the Kids from Wisconsin, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Dorf Kapelle.

Music Directors

Click here for full size picture The Military Band’s founder, Henry G. Bowen, was born in Black Wolf (the township just south of Oshkosh), in 1865, and grew up in the same area. After becoming a proficient cornet player, he became director of the First Regiment Band at Denver CO for three years, after which he went to the east coast and played in and/or conducted bands in Providence RI, Hartford CT and Boston MA. He also performed briefly with the Chicago Marine Band before locating in Fond du Lac to become the founding conductor and manager of the Military Band in 1898.  In 1906 Bowen resigned his position in Fond du Lac and went west, where he distinguished himself as conductor of several well-known bands before returning to Fond du Lac in 1915. He resumed his position with the Military Band in 1916 and continued until ill health forced his retirement in 1929. Mr. Bowen’s obituary in 1948 stated that he was survived by a son, Howard, who was Dean of the College of Commerce and Administration at the University of Illinois-Urbana. It further noted that "He was a member of the famous Sousa’s band early in life and also was identified with many noted musical organizations in the West. He traveled extensively and was acclaimed an authority on music."

The Band’s longest-term conductor, Joseph J. Schmitz, was born in Marytown in 1887 and began studying cornet at the age of 11. He attended high school and business college in Fond du Lac before setting off for Chicago to pursue studies in music, apparently against his parents’ advice. A virtuoso cornetist of considerable repute by that time, he completed studies leading to a lifetime teaching certificate at the Weldon School of Music while supporting himself by playing in the pit orchestra at the La Salle Theater along with other professional engagements.  The several newspaper accounts of his career differ slightly, but the most-reliable sources indicate that he played solo cornet for at least one week in the Sousa band early in his career, and later turned down an opportunity to go on the road with that premiere organization. He likewise refused an offer from the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, choosing instead to return to Fond du Lac where he re-joined the Military Band as solo cornetist in 1919 and played in the local vaudeville houses before being hired to start the instrumental music program in the public schools in 1922.  Schmitz was chosen to conduct the Military Band in 1929, a post he served faithfully for 40 years. His first wife often graced a Sunday afternoon concert with her lovely soprano solos; some time after her death, he was married a second time to the Band’s drum majorette, Georgiana Senkbeil. He retired from the Fond du Lac schools in 1955 but continued to teach part-time in Oakfield for another ten years. He also conducted bands at Horicon and the Wisconsin Home for Women at Taycheedah, and he served as director of the State Fair Band in Milwaukee for several years.  Schmitz retired as director of the Military Band in 1968 at the age of 81, and he passed away a few years later. Many of his alumni continue to play in the Band, and he is still remembered as a talented, gentle, wonderful man and musician.

Click here for full size picture Raymond C. Wifler is a native of Glenbeulah, a small village on the western edge of Sheboygan County in eastern Wisconsin. He received a BS in music education at UW-Oshkosh, and a Masters and Ph.D. in music education at Michigan State University. After several years of conducting school bands in Lomira and Juneau, he moved to Fond du Lac in 1968 to teach music at the newly-opened UW Center-Fond du Lac. He was appointed Chair of the Music Department at Marian College in 1984, and since that time he has developed an accredited instrumental music education degree program at Marian.  Dr. Wifler has directed the Fond du Lac Symphonic Band, an adult community concert band, since its reorganization in 1974. Under his capable and inspired leadership, the Band has grown and flourished, earning a national reputation for musical excellence. Currently in residence at Marian College, the Band offers a cooperative school-year program with the college that allows area college students to perform in the band for college credit.
